the moulin rouge ,
french for 'red mill', it is a cabaret built in 1889 by joseph oller, who also owned the paris olympia. close to montmartre in the paris red-light district of pigalle on boulevard de clichy in the 18th arrondissement, it is marked by the red windmill on its roof. best known as the birthplace of the can can, it now serves as a resturaunt with entertainment on the first floor, the basement holding an up beat and trendy night club where it is much like a speak easy-password, and cash, required to get past the large bouncers. the second floor is a quiet lounge that (as a new edition) actually leads to the roof where the guest may go through the actual new wind mill built and see a beautiful view of paris.
